Canyoning near Interlaken: Local Canyon, Grimsel or Chli Schliere?
Updated October 20, 2026 · 4 min read
Short answer
Three guided canyoning trips leave from Interlaken, and all three are rated 4.9 stars. Local Canyoning Trip takes 3 hours and costs €166.12 (233 reviews). Grimsel Gorge Canyoning Tour takes 5.5 hours and costs €193.09 (94 reviews). Canyoning Chli Schliere takes 7.5 hours and costs €257.82 (51 reviews).
Longer means harder and further away. The local trip is the one to pick unless you’ve done canyoning before.
The three trips at a glance
| Trip | Price | Rating | Duration | What the listing promises |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local Canyoning Trip | €166.12 | 4.9 · 233 | 3 hours | narrow gorges, half-day |
| Grimsel Gorge Canyoning Tour | €193.09 | 4.9 · 94 | 5.5 hours | 50-metre rappel, jumps, slides, zipline into a pool |
| Canyoning Chli Schliere | €257.82 | 4.9 · 51 | 7.5 hours | rappelling over waterfalls, slides, jumps, challenges |
How hard are they
The listings call the local trip a half-day tour through narrow gorges and say nothing about difficulty. For Grimsel the description opens with a “heart-pumping 50-meter rappel”. For Chli Schliere it promises “multiple slides, jumps, and challenges”.
The Swiss operator outdoor.ch, which runs similar trips, ranks its three canyons on a scale from 1 to 10: Interlaken 1, Grimsel 3, Chli Schliere 10. It says that if you can walk at a relaxed pace for 90 minutes you are ready for the Interlaken canyon, and that Chli Schliere suits fit, confident people who are comfortable with big jumps. That is a different company from the ones on GetYourGuide, so treat the scale as a guide to the canyons, not to these bookings. The shape matches the listings, though: three hours, then 5.5, then a full day.
Travel time
The local canyon is close. outdoor.ch’s base is in Wilderswil, 5 minutes from Interlaken. Grimsel and Chli Schliere are about an hour away, and Chli Schliere starts with a 20-minute hike to the entrance. That probably explains part of the longer durations, since both trips start in Interlaken. The listing for Grimsel says you “set off from Interlaken to the mountain pass”.
What the listings don’t say
None of the three descriptions states a minimum age, a weight limit, whether you must swim, or what happens when the water level is wrong. Those conditions are on the booking page of each trip and differ by operator and by canyon. Read them before you pick, and especially if you travel with teenagers. Operators generally cancel canyoning when rain or meltwater makes a canyon unsafe, so keep a spare day.
Who should skip it
- If you are nervous of heights or enclosed spaces. Rappelling and jumping are the point of the longer trips.
- If you want a gentler river day. Rafting on the Lütschine is also guided, with the family version described in our Interlaken with kids guide.
- If you want one jump and nothing else. The Canyon Swing in Grindelwald costs €149.94, takes 2 hours and has 471 reviews at 4.9.
Everything of this type is collected under canyoning, rafting and adventure in Interlaken.
Our pick
The local canyoning trip: of the three, the cheapest, the shortest, the most reviewed. Take Grimsel or Chli Schliere only if you want a long day and are comfortable with the heights.
