Harder Kulm from Interlaken: Funicular Ticket or Guided Hike?

Updated October 20, 2026 · 4 min read

Red funicular car on a steep track between green slopes and a stone stairway

Short answer

Harder Kulm is the viewpoint above Interlaken, 1,322 metres above sea level. The operator, Jungfrau Railways, says the Harder Railway needs 10 minutes to the top. On GetYourGuide you can buy the ride as Attraction Ticket: Interlaken to Harder Funicular at €91.69 per person, rated 3.4 stars from 26 reviews, or walk up with a guide on Guided Hike to Harder Kulm with a Swiss Athlete at €161.81 per person, rated 5.0 stars from 37 reviews.

The ticket price needs a warning. The operator’s own page advertises tickets “from CHF 22”, and a funicular ride that costs over €90 is out of line with that. The listing doesn’t say what the price includes. Before you pay it, compare it with the ticket on the operator’s website, which is the same ride.

What you get at the top

The summit has a panorama restaurant and the Two Lakes Bridge, a lookout platform. From there you see Lake Thun on one side, Lake Brienz on the other, Interlaken in between, and Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau ahead. The GetYourGuide description mentions a viewing platform with sweeping views of the Bernese Alps and Lake Thun.

From up there you see the whole of Interlaken’s setting in one glance. If you only have a few hours and the weather is clear, it is a sensible first stop. In cloud it is a waste: the view is the entire point.

The hike

The hike is private, and the price is listed per person; the listing doesn’t say whether it changes with group size. The description says there are several ascent and descent options, “from very steep to more moderate”, and that the day can be tailored. That is the useful part: you can ask for the gentle route or the hard one. The listing doesn’t say whether the funicular is included for the way up or down, or what the meeting point is. Check both on the booking page.

Five hours is long for a viewpoint. Take it if you want exercise and a guide who adapts to your fitness. If you only want the view, the ride is quicker.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone expecting a bargain. The listing price is far from the operator’s advertised starting price. Check first.
  • Anyone with a cloudy forecast. The funicular doesn’t make the view appear.
  • Anyone who wants the big mountains up close. Harder Kulm shows them from a distance. For that, look at the Jungfraujoch trip from Interlaken or the Grindelwald First cliff walk.
  • Anyone who wants to be in the air. A tandem paragliding flight gives you the same valley from above, at €194.17.

Our pick

For the view, the funicular ticket, but only after you’ve compared its price with the operator’s own. For a physical morning with a guide, the private hike.
